Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, don approve rehabilitation and upgrade of the 5,000 capacity Onikan Stadium, wey dey near Tafawa Balewa Square Lagos Island, so e go meet expectations of a 21st Century sporting facility wey dey in line with the new Onikan-Marina Regeneration plan.
For one statement wey the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde issue on sunday, the state government yan say the upgrade go show em commitment to use sports as tool for development and job creation.
He kon add say the stadium, be the oldest for Nigeria, and na 1930 dem first build am but na for 1980s dem last renovate am.
Ambode follow yan say:
“The upgrading of the stadium will rekindle the interest of football fans in local league, as well as promote sports tourism, take sports to greater heights and encourage youth activities.”
